As the owner and editor here at Amma Edits since 2008, it has been my heart's greatest joy to see authors I've worked with experience literary success.

My journey as an editor began long before I worked as a corporate paralegal and research editor for one of the nation's top banking associations in Washington, DC. (See "My Story" button for more.)

I was born in the United States but grew up in Ghana, where my family is from. While living in Ghana, I learned how to speak and write British English (and Twi) fluently. This gives me an edge because I can easily tell what an author means when they write 'football' vs 'soccer' or 'pants' vs 'trousers'. Or, when they spell it as 'colour' and not 'color' or 'travelled' and not 'traveled'.

Since moving back to the United States in the late 90s, I have lived in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Georgia, where I currently reside with my husband, Joe, and two daughters, Ellie and Essie.

When I'm not busy editing manuscripts, you can find me walking through nature, reading, or hanging out with my beautiful family.

Amma is a fantastic resource for an author, and wonderful to work with.
My Story

My Story...

I got my start as an editor in October 2008, when I served as the publisher and editor-in-chief of an online magazine called AFRIKAN GODDESS MAGAZINE.

The magazine, which highlighted the achievements of African women humanitarians across the world, was one of the first few publications of its kind during the late 2000s.

During my time as the publisher of AFRKAN GODDESS MAGAZINE, I profiled trendsetting women such as Mariama Mounir Camara-Petrolawicz, co-founder and president of There is No Limit Foundation; MacDella Cooper, founder of MacDella Cooper Foundation and 2017 presidential candidate of Liberia; Noella Coursaris Musunka, model and Founder of Malaika Foundation; and several others.

I ran the magazine successfully for 5 years and managed a team of 4 - 5 writers.

In addition to the magazine, I also worked full-time as a corporate paralegal and research editor in Washington, DC, and served as a staff editor for OnPoint Newsletter, a publication of the National Capital Area Paralegal Association. It was a very exciting time in my young professional life.

In 2012, I edited my first book project.
I was approached by a fellow blogger who asked me to edit her novel. That editing project led to more projects, which set me on the path to becoming a book editor.

In October 2013, I moved to Georgia.
I thought it was going to be easy for me to find work as a corporate paralegal.
Boy, was I in for the shock of my life...

After several job interviews, many of which seemed so close to landing me a job only for me to be ghosted, my husband suggested that I channel my frustration and tears into focusing on what I was already doing on the side.
Editing!

In just a few months, I was able to turn what was once a side hustle into a full-time business.

By late January 2014, I had thrown myself fully into my new role as a freelance book editor.

The rest...as they say...is history!

My combined experience as an editor, publisher, legal professional, and storyteller has been beneficial to my clients because I bring a diverse set of skills to each project. When you choose me as your editor, you will work directly with me. I offer personal one-on-one service and dedicate my time and efforts to ensuring that your story is exactly what you envision it to be.

If this is what you've been looking for, then you're in the right place, and I look forward to helping you tell your story.
